Blog about the Presser Foot Crash Course at Quilt Quarters

Quilt Quarter’s Presser Foot Crash Course

October 17, 2022/in Quilting, Quilting Machines, Sewing, Sewing Machines/by Tiffany Powell

When starting out your journey in the realm of fabrics, machines, techniques, and the like, it’s easy to get lost. Especially when there are so many little details that make distinguishing between one thing and another rather niche, Quilt Quarters is the one-stop quilting and sewing shop for all the materials and information you could need.

One of those “little detail, big difference” facets of sewing and quilting is the presser foot. Just a small part of most sewing and quilting machines, this little gadget has the potential to make your project the easiest one yet or just not quite right.

Here’s our presser foot crash course on 5 popular presser feet!

The Standard Zig-Zag Foot

This presser foot is normally included with machines, and for good reason! Especially for beginners, it might be the only presser foot you need, with the ability to complete straight stitches, zig-zag stitches, decorative stitches, overcasting stitches, and satin stitches.

The only jam you may run into is this foot’s proclivity for getting certain types of materials and fabrics stuck – and that’s when you move to a different foot!

The Quilting Foot

As you might gather from the name, the quilting foot is used mainly for – wait for it – quilting! This foot does it’s job by holding all the components and layers of a quilt in place while they are fed evenly through the machine for the stitches to be made. This foot is made to handle difficult-to-use fabrics, as well, so they’re often used with fleece and other heavy materials.

Be aware! There are many names for this foot out there, including the walking foot, the even-feed foot, or even the darning, hopping, or free-motion foot! It’s the topic of debate amongst the quilting and sewing community, as there are some that categorize it separately from a walking foot, and there are some that lump it in with the Free-Motion foot! You’ll see a lot of discrepancy when it comes to which names go with which foot, but the most important thing to note is that in most situations, you can quilt with presser feet that bear any of the names included.

The Blind-Hem Foot

This foot is also rather self-explainable, but it’s used for a professional-looking hemline on garments. While there are multiple styles of this particular foot, they all have an extension at the front to guide the fold of the fabric as it is sewn. This foot allows for topstitches as well, and is special because most of the stitch resides inside the hem, so that it’s almost invisible on the inside and outside.

Bonus: This foot works particularly well on course-woven fabrics like wool and linen.

The Free-Motion Foot

As another highly-debated foot, a lot of sewing enthusiasts and beginners alike categorize this foot either as an umbrella foot which covers the darning, embroidery, quilting, walking, even-feed, hopping, and stippling feet or as something entirely different. Again, the important thing to know is that this foot allows for a lot of creativity when it comes to projects, since you can sew in all directions.

And, to everyone’s point in the discussion, regardless of name, it can work in place of each and every foot that it lists. Perhaps not as well as a specially-crafted foot does, but it does the trick!

The Buttonhole Foot

Our final foot is the buttonhole foot. Not to be confused with the “button foot” that holds flat buttons down and does the sewing for you, this foot is for creating a four-step buttonhole. If you’re not sure what that is, that’s okay! Basically, it means that you measure and mark the button yourself, then, in a series of four steps that your machine will usually provide, sew each side of the buttonhole individually.

And there’s your presser foot crash course! If you’re still a little confused, feel free to reach out! You can fill out a contact form on our website, call us at (317) 757-8340, or visit us at our store location at 9504 Haver Way, Indianapolis, IN 46240 and get some friendly, personal, face-to-face help for all your presser foot questions!

Quilt Quarters applique bench pillows class

NEW CLASS ALERT: Get Double the Fun with a 2-Part Class Exploring Applique “Bench Pillows”

October 3, 2022/in Classes, Quilting, Sewing/by Tiffany Powell

Attention all furniture-dé cor fanatics, every seamstress and seamster out there, and those wanting to learn a new sewing skill – we have a class for you!

In this 2-part class, you’ll get to know the ins and outs of the Raw Edge Fusible Applique from the “Bench Pillows for All Seasons” book by Chris Malone. And once you learn the first time in the first season, you’ll be set to make all the different season-specific bench pillows that your heart desires!

This new, 2-part series class will be taught by Debby Gwirtz, and you can sign up by visiting the store or calling us at 317-757-8340! Session 1 will be on November 2nd and Session 2 on November 16th from 10am to 1pm on both days – follow our Facebook Page to get all the news right on your dashboard. Class cost is $35, and we’ll get into a little more detail about each session below. Check it out and sign up now!

Part 1:

Coming November 2nd, you’ll get part 1 of the 2-class series on bench pillows. What’s so great about this class, though, if you’ve made regular pillows before? You might be thinking, “Well, it can’t be all that different.”

While that might be true for some forms, styles, and techniques, our class series gives you the opportunity to focus on one technique in particular – the Raw Edge Fusible Applique. Using the birdhouse pattern from Chris Malone’s book, “Bench Pillows for All Seasons” ($8 for electronic download and $10 for a physical copy), which will need to go on your shopping list before attending the class, you’ll learn the tips and tricks to apply when it comes to this fast and easy method.

For a comprehensive class list, visit our Quilt Quarters location at 9504 Haver Way, Indianapolis, IN 46240.

Part 2:

After completing the first part of the class, you get to come back for another fun-filled day at Quilt Quarters on November 16th for Class #2!

Since you’ll already be an expert at the Raw Edge Fusible Applique, this class will take you into the second phase of a bench pillow and provide all the information and facets of quilting with a walking foot – perhaps even a feed foot! We’ll start the class off by adding two very important borders around the applique piece from Class #1, and then move into quilting around the applique shapes, as well as stitching in the ditch.

To finalize your newly sewn bench pillow, we’ll discuss tips on how to measure, cut, and sew on borders, the pillow back, and more!

Keep in mind that if you intend to make the bench pillows during the classes, a 16″ x 38″ pillow form will fit the case perfectly. Any kind is acceptable, but if you don’t know where to start, correct sizes are offered by Kimberbell, Crafter’s Choice, and at Annie’s Craft Store

Don’t wait! Call 317-757-8340 or visit the Quilt Quarter’s store to sign up now!

September 21, 2022/in Bernina, Sewing, Sewing Machines/by Tiffany Powell

When it comes to machines in a series, sometimes the “What’s the Difference?” question can get a little fickle. For the Bernette 60 series, which includes the Bernette 62 Airlock, Bernette 64 Airlock, and Bernette 68 Airlock, you might be wondering how much of a difference there can be in three machines that are all so great. But each holds a different specialty and at least one feature that is unique to that model, so that our customers can get what they need out of the machine they invest in! WARNING: Lot’s of information-packed bullet points ahead!

With the Bernette 64 Airlock overlock machine, the unique features that you’ll get are:

The Bernette 68 Airlock’s unique features that you can’t find in other models include:

  • Combo stitch width 7, 8-12, 6 mm
  • 5-thread safety stitch

QUILT QUARTERS

“If you are looking for a good quilting machine, go talk to Tiffany at Quilt Quarters. I purchased a Bernina Q16 machine last March from her. In 5 months I learned so much about free motion quilting. Today I shared with her and the staff my first king sized quilt. They were so kind and encouraging. What fun! It is nice to have the people who work at the store point at the fabric and say, ‘Oh, I remember that fabric.’ Every time I go into the store there is a warm welcome and people are always willing to help me find fabric. I have never felt pressured to purchase or to hurry my decision. And the selection of beautiful fabric is lovely. So thank you to the owner and the people working so hard to serve us all well!”

SEWING & VACUUM AUTHORITY

“Great selection of good, affordable machines. Love the personal service and that I can go in and try a machine before buying it. This helps me know if this machine feels right or wrong for me and my skill level. After you buy a machine, they also allow you to set up a one on one class to learn, master your machine and it’s settings. You may pay more than a big box sewing machine but you can’t try them before buying and sales are usually final and there’s a difference. I have both which is what led me into sewing authority. Highly recommend them.”

QUILT QUARTERS

“Excellent staff. My wife purchased a new Bernina (Horn) quilt sewing cabinet from them in December. When it came in they promptly notified us and scheduled a delivery. The people that delivered the huge and heavy cabinet was Erich Sunde and his partner. They came a few minutes early, carried it to the basement and had it set up and running within minutes. Very pleasant and respectful folks. Overall, the whole experience was very satisfying and this should be the model for other businesses to follow.”

“The ladies working at the Clarksville store are tremendous! Bev, Julie, Rosemary, Sarah and Samantha are always smiling and friendly, ready and willing to help with any question or problem I may have, and gladly share quilting tips and techniques. As a fairly novice quilter, I so appreciate each of them. Clarksville is where I bought my sewing machine and almost all the fabrics I’ve used so far.”

QUILT QUARTERS

“I was looking for a Bernina, Quilt Quarters is the closest Bernina dealer to my house, and the place is wonderful. I went in looking for a B535, I took a B570 QE Kaffe home with me with the embroidery module and the luggage for both! They had both machines and the luggage in stock! I couldn’t pass up the black friday deal, lol. It was very quick and painless, I used my Bernina credit card for a nice long 60-month interest free financing (also a black friday only deal direct from Bernina.) The 570 is such a joy to use. I have no complaints about the machine or the customer service. It was a very pleasant experience. Tiffany is awesome and very helpful, very happy.”

SEWING & VACUUM AUTHORITY

“My local dealer wanted $750-800. and were going to ship it to Chicago for repair. It would take 6-8 weeks.I took my Bernina 880 here because it would no longer self thread. They fixed it in less than 2 weeks for only $125.00. Also found out that they are MUCH cheaper for supplies, material, thread, etc. than my local dealer. This is the place for all sewing machine repair as well as a great place to shop. While talking to them we inquired about some local restaurants. They steered us right. Food was great. It was well worth the 2 hour drive. They also have a GREAT assortment of new and used vacuums for sale.”
