Here are 3 projects that you can make with fun Halloween fabrics for yourself or your loved ones!

1. A Homemade Trick-or-Treat Bag

A Halloween project of sewing your own trick-or-treat bag.

Regardless of your preferred trick-or-treating candy vessel, whether it be an old pillowcase or the classic plastic pumpkin, we all know that the candy inside is the star of the show. However, having a customized, home-sewn trick-or-treat bag with any design you want can be a great gift to be used for years or included as an accessory to match this year’s costume! With so many cute fabrics and bells and whistles to add, a unique trick-or-treat bag might just score a full-sized candy bar at the right house!

2. Boo-yah! Cute Ghosties Embroidery Hoop Art

Embroidery is a wonderful craft for creative minds, and Halloween brings around the opportunity to stitch cutesy ghosts, anthropomorphic pumpkins, friendly mummies, and funny Halloween puns on your hoop. There is no shortage of designs and ideas out there, but if you’re looking for inspiration and a free pattern, then this Boo-yah! Quiltbroidery 101 class by Brother

Upcoming Event Reminder: Quiltbroidery by Brother

September 22, 2023/in Brother, Embroidery, Events, Quilting/by Tiffany Powell

Attention fans of Brother and all Quilt Quarters customers! Coming up on September 29th and 30th, Quilt Quarters is hosting a Brother Special Event at the store called Quiltbroidery 101. Tickets are $49.99 per day and each day’s event will last from 9am-4pm and includes fun, hands-on learning opportunities with a super-duper Brother machine and lots of companionship from other sewing enthusiasts.

You don’t want to miss this big event that’s happening at our store next weekend, so make sure you clear your schedule and buy your tickets for Quiltbroidery 101 – we want to see you there!

What is Quiltbroidery?

Quiltbroidery lies at the intersection of quilting (including piecing and appliqué ) and machine embroidery. It ranges from stitching machine-embroidery designs on patchwork to completing a bed-sized quilt with batting and backing, all using your embroidery machine. While some Quiltbroidery techniques are machine-specific, relying on the software and functionality of a particular machine model, others can be accomplished on any machine with basic embroidery capabilities…even in a 4″ x 4″ hoop.

Come Join Us!

This hands-on Brother event is a full day of sewing and embroidery fun! Attendees will explore advanced technology features to piece and quilt the center of their project. Then, try their hand at edge-to-edge quilting in the hoop. A custom appliqué  provides the opportunity to test drive the ScanNCut DX SDX330D and discover why an electronic cutting machine is the perfect companion for their embroidery machines. The event features NEW Edge-to-Edge Quilting & My Connection, so don’t miss out and buy your tickets today!

Should I Buy a Sewing Cabinet or a Sewing Table?

August 21, 2023/in Sewing/by Tiffany Powell

So, you’ve decided to make the jump and clear off that space on your dining table or countertop that’s constantly filled up with sewing notions, your machine, and various bits and bobbins. One sewing project turns into another, then another, and soon enough, your machine seems to permanently be out on the surfaces that you need in everyday life instead of a sewing cabinet or table.

But where do you put it? There never seems to be a place dedicated to your sewing machine, so you take a look at Quilt Quarter’s website and find our “Sewing Tables” and “Sewing Cabinets” tabs to take a look. There are plenty of different kinds, shapes, and sizes, but we guarantee that there is one meant for you.

Here’s a few considerations to keep in mind as you decide to make a big purchase on a sewing cabinet or a sewing table for your sewing space.

1. Portability

One of the primary difference between sewing tables and sewing cabinets is the power of portability. If you think you’ll be taking your sewing on the road, such as to sewing guilds, on RVs, to your vacation spot, or between rooms in your home, then you’ll want to start looking at the lightweight sewing tables. They might not have as much storage as cabinets, but they give you a sturdy, reliable space dedicated to sewing with the option of adding storage.

2. Storage

Do you have a lot of notions, loose fabric, or other items like irons, other machines, or hoops? Then you might want more storage! Sewing cabinets will give you the most storage between that and tables, but not all sewing cabinets contain the same amount of storage. Some will have more drawers in different styles, some will more compact, some will include storage pegs or shelves, and others won’t – which one you’ll want in your sewing space is all up to how many supplies you have to store!

3. Machine Position

Some tables and cabinets will have different machine positioning options, including:

  • Flat-bed
  • Free-arm
  • Storage
  • Flush with the table (Usually only available with a custom acrylic insert)

Depending on if you need all 3 or 4 positions, sewing cabinets will usually have all positions available while sewing tables usually only have 2. If you would rather have a surface that will put your machine in a no-show storage position to optimize workspace when it’s not in use, then the cabinet would be the sewing furniture to satisfy that need.

4. Size

Depending on the size of your sewing space, you might not have enough space for a full cabinet. Luckily, there are plenty of compact cabinets that can shrink down to just 25 ½” W x 17 ¼” D x 30 1/8” H. Tables can be wider, but most of them can be folded down until they are completely flat to be put away somewhere, which is a big advantage for sewists who don’t have the spatial luxury of keeping a table out 24/7!

5. Extensions/Available Space

Finally, you’ll want to consider how big your projects are and how much space you’ll need to work on. Bigger projects will need bigger surfaces, so cabinets or tables with a dropleaf will be in your favor. Between cabinets and tables, usually, the available space to work on doesn’t change too much, only the space below the top. This will be a good contributing factor for your spatial limitations, too, as you can have more space when the table or cabinet is in use but disengage the dropleaf when in storage.

If you’re ready to buy a sewing cabinet or sewing table or have additional questions, give us a call at 317-757-8340 or visit our showroom to see a few pieces of sewing furniture in action!

A complete fabric sizing guide for pre-cut fabrics

Fat Quarters and Other Pre-Cut Fabric Sizes

August 14, 2023/in Embroidery, Quilting, Sewing/by Tiffany Powell

Many of you know that Quilt Quarters has over 7,000 square feet of space where we house tons of fabric and always have new collections coming in from big fabric names like Riley Blake, FreeSpirit, Moda, and Makower UK. But if you’re new to sewing, quilting, and all things fabric, it might be daunting looking at all of the different fabrics and wanting a little bit of each, but not knowing how to ask for that. That’s okay! Pre-cut fabric is one of the most common ways to purchase fabric, especially since a lot of projects will require a set amount of pre-cut fabrics to make it easy on the seamstress. Many fabric stores will have these readily available and in bundles, as well, so that you can have that ‘little bit of everything’ that you’re looking for.

Here’s Quilt Quarter’s quick guide to 7 different pre-cut fabric sizes and bundles!

1. Fat Quarters

Fat quarters are one of the most popular pre-cut sizes that you’ll find in stores and for projects. Each fat quarter is 18″ x 22″ and will usually be bundled with one fat quarter from each fabric of a collection. It gives the same amount of fabric as a traditional 1/4-yard cut, but is cut in a more rectangular shape for more width.

2. Fat Eighths

Fat eighths measure 9″ x 22″, meaning that they are similar to a fat quarters in height but have only half the width. It gives the same yardage as a traditional 1/8-yard cut, but again, is cut in a more rectangular shape for more width.

3. Turnovers, or Half Square Triangles

Turnovers are one of the popular non-square or rectangle shapes that you can buy pre-cut. They’re handy for pinwheels and triangle patterns without having to cut squares yourself. They are 6″ triangles and are trademarked to the Moda brand, but many stores will sell these triangle bundles under the half-square triangle name.

4. Jellyrolls

Jellyrolls are strips of fabric that are rolled up together to create a roll when bundled together. These strips measure 2.5” x 42″ and are often used for borders, sashing, and binding.

5. Charms

Charm cuts are 5″ x 5″ squares often sold in bundles that are called 5″ Stackers or Bali Packs and contain at least one of each print in a collection, but usually more than one. These are a wonderful way to get a variety of fabric for small projects and quilts!

6. Mini-Charms

Mini-charms are exactly what their name implies – a miniature version of the charm cut. These 2.5″ x 2.5″ squares are perfect for small or mini projects, or to get a sampler of each fabric from a collection before making a big purchase.

7. Layer Cakes

While mini-charms are the miniature version of the charm cut, layer cake bundles are the enlarged version! These pre-cut squares are 10″ x 10″ and are sometimes called 10″ Stackers. With these, you can cut them down to charm, mini-charm, or jellyroll sizes to get a variety of squares and shapes from one bundle like you can with fat quarters and fat eighths.

Father’s Day Crafts | 3 Projects to make Dad Smile

June 7, 2023/in Embroidery, Projects, Quilting, Sewing/by Tiffany Powell

Just a month ago, we published our blog, “Mother’s Day Crafts | 3 Perfect Projects for Mother’s Day,” and we think that dads all around the globe will appreciate a hand-made gift just as much as we’re certain that moms did. So, for this Father’s Day, we went around and collected a project for our variety of seamstresses, embroiderers, and quilters so that the fathers in their life would have something to hold that’s more than just a store-bought card with a funny saying on it. Check out these 3 Father’s Day Crafts:

For Those Who Embroider

Looking for a last minute project? We’ve got you covered! This easy Father’s Day Mystery Gift Bag is the perfect way to compile random elements that your father-figure loves into a single gift without having to put a theme to it. Or, go ham! Make him a customized BBQ sauce making kit, or put in the elements of his perfect movie night – the possibilities are endless, and nothing is easier than drawing out a fun design and embroidering it onto your choice of bag for Dad to keep with him. This gift is super customizable, so we’ve included a list of kits that Dad might like and a list of designs that you can draw from!

For Those Who Sew

Does the father in your life like to golf? Whether it be a husband, boyfriend, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, or nephew, they’ll be sure to appreciate the extra care afforded to their beloved clubs. These hardy headcovers are made from marine vinyl fabric, which is waterproof and made to resist the tough elements that outdoor activities can throw at them! Let the man you’re celebrating for father’s day know that you care about their passions and sew as many of these golf club covers as you please!

For Those Who Quilt

Coming right off the tail-end of spring cleaning, did you happen to go through your closets and find a box full of old school and sports t-shirts that are just too nostalgic to let go of? Good news! Here’s a Father’s Day project that can take care of that, too. A memory t-shirt quilt will clear out those boxes and provide a nice, cozy quilt for the man you’re celebrating, so get out those boxes, sort through the logos, and revel in the space you save by putting 15-30 old shirts into one new and very usable quilt.

QUILT QUARTERS

“If you are looking for a good quilting machine, go talk to Tiffany at Quilt Quarters. I purchased a Bernina Q16 machine last March from her. In 5 months I learned so much about free motion quilting. Today I shared with her and the staff my first king sized quilt. They were so kind and encouraging. What fun! It is nice to have the people who work at the store point at the fabric and say, ‘Oh, I remember that fabric.’ Every time I go into the store there is a warm welcome and people are always willing to help me find fabric. I have never felt pressured to purchase or to hurry my decision. And the selection of beautiful fabric is lovely. So thank you to the owner and the people working so hard to serve us all well!”

SEWING & VACUUM AUTHORITY

“Great selection of good, affordable machines. Love the personal service and that I can go in and try a machine before buying it. This helps me know if this machine feels right or wrong for me and my skill level. After you buy a machine, they also allow you to set up a one on one class to learn, master your machine and it’s settings. You may pay more than a big box sewing machine but you can’t try them before buying and sales are usually final and there’s a difference. I have both which is what led me into sewing authority. Highly recommend them.”

QUILT QUARTERS

“Excellent staff. My wife purchased a new Bernina (Horn) quilt sewing cabinet from them in December. When it came in they promptly notified us and scheduled a delivery. The people that delivered the huge and heavy cabinet was Erich Sunde and his partner. They came a few minutes early, carried it to the basement and had it set up and running within minutes. Very pleasant and respectful folks. Overall, the whole experience was very satisfying and this should be the model for other businesses to follow.”

“The ladies working at the Clarksville store are tremendous! Bev, Julie, Rosemary, Sarah and Samantha are always smiling and friendly, ready and willing to help with any question or problem I may have, and gladly share quilting tips and techniques. As a fairly novice quilter, I so appreciate each of them. Clarksville is where I bought my sewing machine and almost all the fabrics I’ve used so far.”

QUILT QUARTERS

“I was looking for a Bernina, Quilt Quarters is the closest Bernina dealer to my house, and the place is wonderful. I went in looking for a B535, I took a B570 QE Kaffe home with me with the embroidery module and the luggage for both! They had both machines and the luggage in stock! I couldn’t pass up the black friday deal, lol. It was very quick and painless, I used my Bernina credit card for a nice long 60-month interest free financing (also a black friday only deal direct from Bernina.) The 570 is such a joy to use. I have no complaints about the machine or the customer service. It was a very pleasant experience. Tiffany is awesome and very helpful, very happy.”

SEWING & VACUUM AUTHORITY

“My local dealer wanted $750-800. and were going to ship it to Chicago for repair. It would take 6-8 weeks.I took my Bernina 880 here because it would no longer self thread. They fixed it in less than 2 weeks for only $125.00. Also found out that they are MUCH cheaper for supplies, material, thread, etc. than my local dealer. This is the place for all sewing machine repair as well as a great place to shop. While talking to them we inquired about some local restaurants. They steered us right. Food was great. It was well worth the 2 hour drive. They also have a GREAT assortment of new and used vacuums for sale.”
