What is Appliqué  Embroidery?

What is Appliqué  Embroidery?

January 15, 2024/in Embroidery/by Tiffany Powell

Learning about the many different crafting techniques and methods that exist is one of the most exciting parts of crafting that allows you to expand your skill set and jump into creating new projects. Here at Quilt Quarters, we love to broaden and share our own crafting knowledge with the hope of inspiring others to get creative and try something new. The crafting technique we’ll be exploring in this blog post is appliqué  embroidery, which is a fun way to add unique designs to your project. So, what is appliqué  embroidery?

The Difference Between Embroidery and Appliqué  Embroidery

Before jumping straight into the ins and outs of appliqué  embroidery, it is important to mention how it differs from the traditional embroidery method that most are familiar with.

  • Embroidery is a method of sewing that includes using only embroidery thread to create special designs, which can be done either by hand or machine.
  • Appliqué  embroidery is a sewing technique that involves taking smaller pieces of fabric and stitching them onto a larger fabric to make a special pattern or design, which can also be done by hand or machine.

The History of Appliqué

Rather than starting out as a way to add beautiful, unique designs to fabrics, appliqué  has more practical origins. It was first used as a way to strengthen worn parts of weakened items and patch holes that would form. People from all over the world have used the technique of appliqué  to repair and lengthen the life of items such as clothing, blankets, tents, bags, etc. Examples of appliqué d items have even been discovered dating all the way back to the ancient Egyptians!

Methods of Appliqué

Moving away from its more practical origins, appliqué  is mostly used today as a way to add decorations and designs to pieces of fabric. In order to successfully execute your desired appliqué  design, there are several different methods you can use to achieve the look you envision for the final product.

These methods include:

  • Machine Appliqué : Using a sewing machine to stitch around the outside of a smaller piece of fabric to attach it to a larger fabric.
  • Hand Appliqué : Using your hands, this method is the more traditional approach of hand stitching a fabric design onto a larger fabric.
  • Fused Appliqué : Looking for a quicker way to appliqué ? This method uses a fusible web, which is usually an iron-on adhesive, to adhere appliqué  designs to the larger base fabric.

Styles of Appliqué

There are also different styles of appliqué  that can impact the overall finish of the appliqué d shape.

These styles include:

  • Smooth Edge Appliqué - Stitching thread over the raw edges of the appliqué d shapes to create a smooth finish around the edges
  • Raw Edge Appliqué - Sewing on appliqué  shapes without finishing or turning the edges
  • Reverse Appliqué - Instead of stitching your fabric design on top, layer your fabric so that when you cut away the top fabric layer and stitch it in place, your design will be revealed underneath.
  • Decorative Stitch Appliqué - Using a sewing machine, you can experiment with different stitch options to finish the edges of your appliqué  to make your design stand out

Come and explore the craft at Quilt Quarters, and see how appliqué  can be applied to your projects! Many of our classroom crafting sessions and classes address appliqué  along with tons of other techniques and methods to boost your skills. Check out our calendar today!

QUILT QUARTERS

“If you are looking for a good quilting machine, go talk to Tiffany at Quilt Quarters. I purchased a Bernina Q16 machine last March from her. In 5 months I learned so much about free motion quilting. Today I shared with her and the staff my first king sized quilt. They were so kind and encouraging. What fun! It is nice to have the people who work at the store point at the fabric and say, ‘Oh, I remember that fabric.’ Every time I go into the store there is a warm welcome and people are always willing to help me find fabric. I have never felt pressured to purchase or to hurry my decision. And the selection of beautiful fabric is lovely. So thank you to the owner and the people working so hard to serve us all well!”

SEWING & VACUUM AUTHORITY

“Great selection of good, affordable machines. Love the personal service and that I can go in and try a machine before buying it. This helps me know if this machine feels right or wrong for me and my skill level. After you buy a machine, they also allow you to set up a one on one class to learn, master your machine and it’s settings. You may pay more than a big box sewing machine but you can’t try them before buying and sales are usually final and there’s a difference. I have both which is what led me into sewing authority. Highly recommend them.”

QUILT QUARTERS

“Excellent staff. My wife purchased a new Bernina (Horn) quilt sewing cabinet from them in December. When it came in they promptly notified us and scheduled a delivery. The people that delivered the huge and heavy cabinet was Erich Sunde and his partner. They came a few minutes early, carried it to the basement and had it set up and running within minutes. Very pleasant and respectful folks. Overall, the whole experience was very satisfying and this should be the model for other businesses to follow.”

“The ladies working at the Clarksville store are tremendous! Bev, Julie, Rosemary, Sarah and Samantha are always smiling and friendly, ready and willing to help with any question or problem I may have, and gladly share quilting tips and techniques. As a fairly novice quilter, I so appreciate each of them. Clarksville is where I bought my sewing machine and almost all the fabrics I’ve used so far.”

QUILT QUARTERS

“I was looking for a Bernina, Quilt Quarters is the closest Bernina dealer to my house, and the place is wonderful. I went in looking for a B535, I took a B570 QE Kaffe home with me with the embroidery module and the luggage for both! They had both machines and the luggage in stock! I couldn’t pass up the black friday deal, lol. It was very quick and painless, I used my Bernina credit card for a nice long 60-month interest free financing (also a black friday only deal direct from Bernina.) The 570 is such a joy to use. I have no complaints about the machine or the customer service. It was a very pleasant experience. Tiffany is awesome and very helpful, very happy.”

SEWING & VACUUM AUTHORITY

“My local dealer wanted $750-800. and were going to ship it to Chicago for repair. It would take 6-8 weeks.I took my Bernina 880 here because it would no longer self thread. They fixed it in less than 2 weeks for only $125.00. Also found out that they are MUCH cheaper for supplies, material, thread, etc. than my local dealer. This is the place for all sewing machine repair as well as a great place to shop. While talking to them we inquired about some local restaurants. They steered us right. Food was great. It was well worth the 2 hour drive. They also have a GREAT assortment of new and used vacuums for sale.”
